How An Asphalt Lot Transforms Into A Public Market
By Malaya Wingerter and Spencer Inglett
Every Saturday people in the valley go to an outdoor market where an asphalt lot is turned into a collection of products, people and culture. We decided to witness it for ourselves and walked over to the open air market. When we got there we were immediately greeted with very hot and humid weather and the smell of varieties of products. We interviewed two people, one being a long time vendor and the other being a committed customer. Celia Peterson talked about how the landscape of the market has changed throughout her thirteen years of being there. Additionally, she talked to us about the importance of healthy foods and how she utilizes the market as her socialization, as she lives on a farm with animals all week. She was very lighthearted and really enjoys interacting with other people within the community. The other person we interviewed was Amy, a committed customer of the market. Since moving from Virginia, Amy has been coming to the Phoenix market for three years. However when we were there, Amy was there to purchase bread from Arizona Bread Company, even though she usually comes to purchase breakfast burritos from Focaccia Fiorentina.
